Who Knee Pain Can affect

The knee joint is the single largest load bearing structure in the body and with every step taken when walking there is one-and-a-half times body weight coming through each knee and up to three times body weight when running. For sports activities such as twisting, jumping and landing heavily, forces are significantly higher again. Providing the individual is well conditioned then the knee can cope just fine with these forces and indeed regular activity of any kind helps maintain knee health. When joints are overloaded i.e. high BMI or not getting adequate rest and recovery between training and events then things can break down quite quickly.

A common misconception we hear in the clinic a lot is that running is bad for the knees. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Our evolutionary history is that of being highly successful semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers. Our ancestors would spend their days on their feet often covering a marathon distance per day just to find enough food, water and shelter to survive until the next day. Elite marathon runners over the age of 50 have been shown to have less knee arthritis than sedentary age matched controls so being inactive is bad for your knees whereas lots of long distance running appears not to be. We evolved to be active and even if injured we ‘d have to still be able to keep up with the rest of the tribe to ensure our safety. Modern lifestyles have afforded us the option of being able to have prolonged rest when we are injured but this is often detrimental in the long term.

We treat a wide-range of knee pain patients in the clinic from adolescents with growth related problems, to competitive club runners gunning for a PB or grandparents still trying to keep up with their grandchildren.

For patients with sports / running related knee pain either over the front (jumpers knee) or side (runners knee) we offer shockwave therapy. This treatment breaks up scar tissue and calcification in overloaded tendons and can be very effective in helping patients return to the sports and activities they love.

Understanding & Treating Knee Pain

At Wellness in Motion we also treat numerous adolescent sports stars of the future. Teens can present with a range of growth-related or over-use related conditions such as Osgoods-Schlatters, osteo-chondral defects or patello-femoral pain syndrome. We are experienced in recognising when teens require a period of rest or if it may be safe to push through symptoms or when further investigation such as scans or X-rays may be required. Worst thing you can do with your child is adopt a wait and see policy without first knowing what is wrong!

Our Approach to Knee Pain

We emphasise the knee’s role as the body’s largest load-bearing joint, highlighting its capability to withstand significant forces during daily activities like walking and running.

Our approach contrasts sharply with the limited management options often offered in public health systems, where patients with knee issues are frequently advised to endure the pain until it worsens enough to justify surgical intervention. Wellness in Motion challenges this approach, advocating for proactive and comprehensive management strategies that include targeted hands-on treatments and innovative therapies.
