Are You Suffering With Hypermobility In Chislehurst or Dulwich?

Wellness In Motion is here to help!

At Wellness in Motion, a significant portion of our patient base comprises individuals who are hypermobile, often discovering this for the first time during their consultations. Hypermobility, characterised by unusually elastic collagen in the body, can lead to a range of musculoskeletal issues if not managed properly. Hypermobility is a really useful attribute to have in sports and performing arts but it’s not so great if your job requires prolonged sitting or if you’re a new mum struggling with the physical effects of pregnancy, delivery, breast-feeding and generally looking after small children.

People with hypermobility frequently experience chronic pain, which can vary in intensity and location throughout the body. The constant need to monitor and manage joint stability can lead to fatigue, as muscles work harder to compensate for unstable joints. This chronic pain and fatigue can interfere with daily activities, sleep patterns, and overall quality of life.

People with hypermobility frequently experience widespread, debilitating and persistent pain, which can vary in intensity and location throughout the body. The constant need to monitor and manage joint stability can lead to fatigue, as muscles work harder to compensate for this extra elasticity. At rest the brain of a hypermobile individual often does not receive good quality proprioceptive inputs from joints, muscles and connective tissues. Proprioception is our awareness of what position are joints and muscles are in at any given moment and it is a fundamental requirement of the ‘survival’ parts of our brains to know exactly where everything is in order to be able to execute a flight or fight response at any given moment. In the absence of good proprioception the primitive parts of the nervous system often compel the hypermobile individual to fidget or just to be ‘on the go’ all the time and this is why hypermobility, anxiety and ADHD / neurodivergence often co-exist.

If the hypermobile individual is unable to move enough due to long hours in front of screens for example then the brain will generate pain and stiffness signals as a means of compensating for poor proprioception. Unmanaged, hypermobile patients often end up in a state of constant pain, fatigue, brain fog and burn-out as their body can no longer cope with the demands of having to be on the move all the time or not being able to be comfortable at rest. This cycle of over-activity and poor sleep unsurprisingly interferes with daily activities, hobbies and overall quality of life. Therefore, the knock-on effects and complications that can arise from such a condition can be devastating.

Central to our approach at Wellness in Motion is educating patients about the importance of rehabilitating our deep postural muscles and joint receptors which are crucial for providing accurate feedback to the brain during movement and at rest. In addition to this we need to ensure that the hypermobile individual is aerobically fit enough to maintain good circulation at rest and physically strong enough to withstand the effects of gravity both at rest and when active. Our treatment strategy emphasises empowering hypermobile individuals to maintain their health through structured exercise regimes and ultimately educating you as to how you can be comfortable being still.

"I booked a session with Chris at Wellness in Motion after a prolonged period of being very unwell. I was living in constant pain and had been through endless tests with the NHS for about one and a half years with no answers. I was consistently told I was just 'stressed', diagnosed with fibromyalgia as a catch all, and generally left to fend for myself. Within about 10 minutes of meeting Chris and him actually listening to what I was experiencing and looking at how I moved, he told me that everything I was experiencing was connected to the fact that I was extremely hypermobile. Through a combination of regular visits to Chris for dry needling, his recommended exercises for strengthening and exploration (supported by him) into how to deal with my connective tissue disorder, I manage my condition with much less pain. The dry needling provides much needed tension relief and I've been able to move from weekly to once every 4 to 5 weeks. Chris is always happy to answer questions and provide support and it's made all the difference."
